Tips for Finding the Perfect Plus-Size Bras

Buying bras can be an exercise in frustration. Everything from understanding bra cup sizes to determining what style best suits your needs appears arcane and mysterious. Add to the general confusion the challenges of needing a plus-size bra, and you may be tempted to give up completely. Don’t be overwhelmed. You can take steps to find the right plus-size bra for you more easily.

Measure Your Bra Size Accurately

Do you know how to measure your bra size? Many women think they do but are surprised to learn otherwise. You will need to know how to measure band size and how to measure cup size and then use this info to find your possible bra sizes. Follow these steps for the best results:

  1. Put on your best-fitting non-padded bra. Using a soft measuring tape, measure your rib cage right underneath your bust. Make sure you are standing up tall and that the measuring tape is parallel to the floor.
  2. If you got an even number, add two inches to it to get your band size. If you got an odd number, add three inches.
  3. For your cup size, measure around the fullest part of your bust. It will probably be at your nipples. Your arms should hang loosely at your side and the tape measure must be parallel to the floor.
  4. Now subtract the band number from the bust number. The remaining number indicates your cup size. Zero is AA, one is A, two is B, and so on.

There are bra equivalent sizes that allow you to make minute adjustments. For example, if you measured a 38B but the band is a little tight, you can try a 40A. The cup volume will be about the same. Likewise, if the band is big, go to a 36C for a tighter band with a similar cup volume.

Matching the Best Bra Type With Your Breast Shape

The next step in finding just the right bra is to know your breast shape. Your breasts may be round, bell-shaped, tear-drop, and so on. Stand in front of a mirror with no bra on and observe your breasts’ appearance. Once you’ve identified what type you have, you can match them to a bra. Here are some examples:

  • Athletic breasts – t-shirt bras
  • Asymmetrical breasts – plunge bras
  • Bell-shaped breasts and relaxed breasts – balconette bras
  • Slender breasts – uplift bras

You may need a specialty bra for certain occasions, such as racer-back, backless, or strapless bras. To find the best strapless bra for large breasts, once again check your measurements. Then look for a wider band for better support, grips sewn into the bra’s seams, and sturdy material such as spandex or silicone. These key features will deliver a bra that stays put, even when dancing at your cousin’s wedding.

The next time you go bra shopping for a plus-size bra, don’t sweat it. Follow the steps above then head to your favorite local store or online shop. You can shop with confidence when you know your size and what you need from your bra.
